The Sons of Veterans, USA, is the predecessor organization to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). The Sons of Veterans USA name was changed in 1925, in consultation with the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), so that its members wouldn’t be confused with the veterans of the Spanish-American War and WW I.
The GAR was founded in 1886 and was the largest organization of Union Civil War veterans. After the death of the last GAR member in 1956, the SUVCW became its congressionally chartered successor organization.
The SUVCW Department of the Southwest’s Gen. U.S. Grant Camp and Gen. R.H.G. Minty Camp were named after the Sons of Veterans USA camps that were based in Flagstaff and Tucson.
